From the instant I arrived, I was charmed by the city of Brussels. From the artistic quality of the graffiti on the trains,
and on the trucks . . .

to the streets lined with beautiful buildings, each a bit different and with interesting details, from windows to doorknobs, to delightful murals.

And the door knobs. The doorknobs of Brussels deserve more than one passing mention!

Within the first 24 hours of my stay in this lovely city, I was treated to the four major food groups of Belgium:
Beer
![]() |
| Duchesse De Bourgogne - an acquired taste, but quite delicious! |
Waffles

| Fresh waffles for all! |
Chocolate
![]() |
| Laurent Gerbaud Chocolatier's - some of the purest and most delicious chocolate in Belgium |
Pommes Frites

| I don't think I've ever witnessed a happier bunch of fast food staff. These Pommes Frites guys have a great time at work! |
I'm convinced that this Belgium diet may be the elixir of life, as people in Brussels all look quite fit, happy and healthy. Including the dogs, who are welcome to dine at restaurants with their two legged companions.

This looks like you had so much fun! I am terribly jealous.
ReplyDeleteNow I want to go to Belgium again! I went as a 9 yo and STILL remember how amazing the waffles, frittes, and chocolate were (wasn't allowed near the beer). Would be fascinating to come up with a "four major food groups" breakdown of other countries as well.
ReplyDeleteColleen, I highly recommend Brussels. It's like the Portland of Europe! Well, perhaps it is in competition with Copenhagen for that title. But I doubt Copenhagen has anything on Belgium's major food groups. Your posts about what you've been eating were certainly an inspiration, and I'd love to read about what major food groups you discover in the many places you'll eat your way through!
